Madrid airport to the city center: metro, train, express bus or taxi
Madrid Barajas is 12 kilometers northeast of the center and has the easiest airport connections in Spain. Four options, and the one we recommend depending on how you arrive.
Taxi: flat fare, no surprises
Official white taxis with a red stripe wait outside every terminal. From the airport to any address inside the M-30 ring, which is the whole center, the fare is flat and fixed by the city, whatever the traffic. About 30 minutes to Sol outside rush hour. Cabify and Uber also operate at the airport with a quote shown before you confirm, usually close to the taxi fare.
Exprés Aeropuerto bus: 24 hours, straight to Atocha
Yellow bus, line 203, from all four terminals to Plaza de Cibeles and Atocha station. It runs day and night, with buses every 15 to 20 minutes in the daytime and every 35 minutes at night, and it is the only public transport that never stops. Around 30 to 40 minutes to Atocha. Tickets are bought on board.
Cercanías train: only from Terminal 4
Lines C1 and C10 leave from the station under T4 and stop at Chamartín, Nuevos Ministerios, Atocha and Sol, in 25 to 40 minutes depending on your stop. If you land at T1, T2 or T3, the free shuttle bus to T4 adds about 10 minutes. The best value if your hotel is near Sol or Atocha.
Metro line 8: cheap, with a change
Line 8 serves all terminals and ends at Nuevos Ministerios in about 15 minutes, where you change to line 6, line 10 or Cercanías to reach the center. Count 35 to 45 minutes to Sol and an airport supplement on the ticket. Stations have lifts, but the change at Nuevos Ministerios is a long walk with luggage.
Private transfer: when it pays off
Three or more people, a flight after midnight, or a connection to catch at Atocha. The price is agreed in advance, the driver waits in arrivals with your name and there is no queue. Browse the transfers in our catalog and pick the one that fits your terminal and hour.

How long does it take from Madrid airport to the city center?
About 30 minutes by taxi or by the Exprés Aeropuerto bus to Atocha outside rush hour, 35 to 45 minutes by metro with one change, and 25 to 40 minutes by Cercanías train from Terminal 4 to Atocha or Chamartín.
Is there a fixed taxi fare from Madrid airport?
Yes. Official taxis charge a flat fare from the airport to any address inside the M-30 ring, which covers the whole center. The amount is set by the city each year and posted at the taxi rank, 30 EUR when we checked on 17 September 2026.
Which terminal of Madrid airport does the train serve?
Only Terminal 4. Cercanías lines C1 and C10 leave from the station under T4 to Chamartín, Nuevos Ministerios, Atocha and Sol. From T1, T2 or T3 take the free shuttle bus to T4 first, about 10 minutes.
Does the Madrid airport metro go to the center directly?
No. Line 8 runs from all terminals to Nuevos Ministerios in about 15 minutes, and there you change to line 6 or 10, or to Cercanías. Count 35 to 45 minutes to Sol. The metro charges an airport supplement on top of the ticket.
